What the heck is Compass Rose and who is the Driftwood Man?
That’s me, Greg. I have been collecting driftwood here on the Outer Banks for almost 50 years. First in our swamp lake on the bombing range in Stumpy Point NC to now, a nice stretch of Pamlico Sound shoreline and Alligator River bottom.
Through my import store, Compass Rose we have traveled halfway around the world to Malaysia to bring over 300 Aquarium Stores a great selection of Malaysian Sinking wood. This is, of course, an industry standard wood for freshwater aquatics world wide. We are a major importer of this favorite wood for beginners and advanced hobbyists alike.
We are the exclusive distributor of North Carolina Ancient Cypress and Cedar driftwood. We find it ourselves after hurricanes and coastal storms. This wood is from trees that lived 1000 years ago and more. The shapes are all unique and the coloration is a wonderful deep red.
We also supply our stores with a selection of both grapewood and Manzanita wood from out west. Both types of woodwork for aquariums and reptile habitats. We based some of our grapewood on slate for weight and stability and they work well for plecos in freshwater aquariums. The Manzanita wood is the most branchy wood we stock and makes planted tanks look extremely tropical, providing structure for freshwater shrimp to live in and a wonderful base for establishing aquascapes.
We are developing a line of Manzanita decor for Nano-tanks and freshwater shrimp habitats. We are just introducing them into our network of stores and the response has been amazingly good.
